    VINTAGE SOVEREIGN (OSCAR SCHMIDT) MANDOLIN-BANJO.
These are variously called mandolin-banjo,banjo-mandolin, banjolin, banjourine and sometimes soprano banjo’s.
This Sovereign is a nice 10" pot banjo-mandolin, mid-1920s vintage, built by Oscar Schmidt out of New Jersey. It's branded "Sovereign" which was their upscale house brand, and for good reason: nice hardware, mother-of-pearl inlaid at the 5

The rim of the pot is laminated birds-eye maple.
The inner most ply inside the rim had a horizontal crack … but it has been repaired.
This instrument is complete all the way down to the17

The lower portion of the necks of some mandolin-banjos is unsupported and that portion is frequently broken off.
It has original parts except for a new tail piece, bridge and skin head.
The overall length is 24 inches, the pot is 10 inch in diameter.
The fret board measures 9inches in length, 1 ¼ inch wide at the nut and 1 5/8 inch wide at the bottom.
